Welcome to Civil War Pop!
My name is Christian McWhirter and I am a historian, editor, and pop culture obsessive. On this blog, I’ll regularly review a different piece of culture from or about the Civil War Era. Together, we’ll examine how these films, songs, games, and stories reflect the history and popular memory of the war and its various legacies.
Aside from this blog, I’ve written a book–Battle Hymns: The Power and Popularity of Music in the Civil War (2012)—and several articles in publications such as Civil War Monitor and the New York Times Disunion Blog. In addition, I work as Research Historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and edit the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association. I used to be an assistant editor for The Papers of Abraham Lincoln. I also got to be smart on CNN once, so that was cool.
As someone who is heavily involved in Historical Film, I love your blog!
I’ve tried to steer Old Timey Casting, LLC. toward the accuracy that historical film deserves. It proves a difficult task each time, but with the right people in place, it’s a lot easier to make it happen.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to your future posts!
